A lot of what shapes product decisions never makes it into a feedback tool: sales call notes, customer research, strategy memos, competitive notes. The Google Drive integration lets you bring those files into a conversation with Lane, so its answers draw on them alongside your feedback, Signals and customers, or import them as feedback, so they count toward your Signals like everything else.

Overview

Common use cases:
  • “Summarize the three sales calls from last week and pull out product requests.”
  • “What are the recurring objections in these transcripts?”
  • “Compare the two research reports — where do they disagree?”
  • “Pull the key claims from this strategy doc into a Doc.”
  • “Save the customer requests in these call notes as feedback.”
Lane can quote, summarize and cross-reference attached files like any other context.

Connect

  1. Go to Settings → Integrations → Google Drive.
  2. Click Connect — Lane redirects you to Google’s OAuth consent screen.
  3. Authorize Lane and return to the integration page.
The page shows “Connected as [your-email]” once linked. Each person connects their own Google account, and Lane can read only the files you attach, never your whole Drive.

Permissions requested

Lane asks for two Google scopes:
  • drive.file — access is granted per file, only at the moment you pick that file via Google’s picker. Lane never has blanket Drive access.
  • userinfo.email — to identify the connected Google account.
Google’s consent screen says “See, edit, create, and delete the Google Drive files that you use with this app” because Google standardizes that scope text. Lane only reads — it never writes, edits, or deletes Drive content.

Use files in chat

  1. In a chat, click the paperclip next to Send and choose Google Drive.
  2. Pick your files in Google’s picker.
  3. Ask your question.
Files go with the message you attach them to, and Lane keeps them for the rest of the chat, so you can ask about them later without attaching them again. Lane reads a file only when a question needs it. Google Drive files work in chats in Lane. They aren’t available in Slack or in Agents.

Import files as feedback

Call notes, interview transcripts and survey exports often sit in Drive and never reach your feedback. Import them and each file becomes one feedback item with the file’s text, linked to the customer you choose. Lane analyzes it like any other feedback, so it shows up in your Signals with the customer behind it.
  1. Go to Settings → Integrations → Google Drive.
  2. Under Import files as feedback, click Import files and pick your files. You can select several at once, for example everything in a folder.
  3. Choose a customer for each file, then click Import as feedback.
Lane reads each file as soon as you pick it. If it can’t read one, it says why next to the file.

Supported file types

Scanned PDFs, Excel and PowerPoint files, images, audio and video aren’t supported yet.

What Lane keeps

Lane never changes or deletes anything in Drive. Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and text files you attach in chat are read from Drive when a question needs them, and aren’t stored. PDFs, Word files, JSON and transcripts, and any file you import, are read once: Lane keeps their text for 30 days so it can answer from them, never the file itself. Imported files also become feedback, which stays in Lane like any other feedback.

Long files

Lane reads long files in parts, as the question needs them. Very long files are cut short, and Lane tells you when that happens. If a document is huge, attach the part that matters.

Disconnecting

Two ways:
  • From Lane — Settings → Integrations → Google Drive → Disconnect.
  • From Google — Google Account → Security → Third-party apps with account access → remove Lane.
Disconnecting removes the stored token. Text Lane kept from your files is deleted after 30 days, and feedback you imported stays.

FAQs

Q: Does Lane store my Drive files?
A: Never the files. Lane keeps the text of PDFs, Word files and imported files for 30 days so it can answer from them. Docs, Sheets and Slides attached in chat are read from Drive each time.
Q: Can Lane edit or delete files in Drive?
A: No. The integration is read-only despite Google’s standard scope wording.
Q: What happens if I delete a file after sharing it?
A: Lane reports it couldn’t fetch the file. Nothing in Lane breaks.
Q: Why doesn’t my file work?
A: Lane reads Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, PDF, Word, text, Markdown, CSV, JSON and transcripts. Scanned PDFs and Excel or PowerPoint files aren’t supported yet; save them as Google Sheets or Slides first.
Q: Can an agent watch a Drive folder?
A: Not yet. Lane can open only the files you pick, which keeps its Drive access to exactly those files. To bring in a folder, use Import files as feedback and select all its files at once.
Q: Who can see the files I share with Lane?
A: Chats are private to you. If Lane quotes a file in a Doc you share, people who can see that Doc see the quote.
